Preparing for College Life: Leaving High School

Recently I graduated from high school. As I moved my tassel from right to left, I realized that I have to start getting ready for college and the real world. Not only was it nerve-racking, it was also exciting. I am beginning a chapter where I create the rules and I can decide where I want to go in the future. Even though I have this new found freedom, I am also being pushed out in the world head first without any real warning from teachers or guidance counselors. Change is always a scary thought. Moving on from high school can be a breeze to some, and a nightmare to others. Here are some things to think of before you have a breakdown about leaving high school

Don't be freaked out about leaving your best friends since kindergarten. You should cherish them, but don't cry over them being far away, you will make a thousand more in college (not really, but you'll have a good group of friends). You can always reconnect with people from high school over FaceTime or over a break period. But don't let your sad feelings from graduating prevent you from having a good time in college.

You might not be friends with the people you were friends with in high school. As you hug all your friends and vow to spend the whole summer together, remember that sometimes things and people change. They might go to college in a different state or they might detach themselves from high school entirely. Don't be upset though. This is a normal thing, they are simply maturing. Having time apart from people will either make you drift away from them or bring you closer. But, before you start crying again, think of the people you will meet or have met in college. You can make memories with them. There are a few gems from high school that you will stay in touch with for the rest of your life. Not everyone runs off.

By the time you are actually invested with college, you won't have time to think about certain things. You should try to keep yourself busy with other things. Try to focus on homework (wow what a weird idea), extracurricular activities. or campus activities like football or basketball games. You could even have a girls/guys night with a few of your friends. There are so many opportunities to make college just as comfortable and meaningful as high school was.

Everyone has a different approach to adjusting to college life. Freshman year will be a huge moment for you, and at times you will feel overwhelmed. But, if you keep pushing through and trying your hardest, you will make it out just fine. So, pack your bags and get ready for the best years to come in your life!
