What It's Like Teaching a Freshman Class

As some of you may know, I am a Student Success Leader at my school. In this role, I am paired with a faculty member to teach the freshmen about different aspects of college life. I decided to take on this role because I wanted to expand my horizons. I tend to be pretty shy and reserved when facing new people or public speaking. So I thought, "What better way to fix that problem than to dive right in?" And I'm really glad I did. I was a little nervous for my first class, primarily because I didn't know what to expect. But, my class was just as nervous as I was. I was seen as this seasoned student who might have come off as intimidating. But, I tried my best to make it a fun, and relaxed atmosphere. I actually like connecting with the students and getting to know them a little better. I am still struggling with remembering names, but I'll get there eventually.
I have different responsibilities while doing this. I grade work, lead some discussions, and do "presentations". But, mostly, I am there as a resource for them. I am open to being their mentor as well as helping them figure out how to make college work for them. I have been told multiple times by my mentors that I should pursue teaching, but I think small volunteering opportunities will do, for now. I hope I can be more helpful to them than my SSL was to me my freshman year. It does get a little intimidating for me. I see a room full of faces and I sometimes wonder if they are paying attention or understanding what I'm trying to say. But, when I speak to them one-on-one, they seem to like the class. I'm excited to see how the semester goes and I'm hoping they all will do well in their freshman year!
