Why I Changed My Major & Why It Is Normal

I briefly mentioned in my spring break vlog that I changed my major. I'm going to elaborate on how I came up with this decision, what I plan on doing with my new major, and a few tips for those who are thinking of changing their major.

The second day of my spring break, I was home alone and very bored. I sat on my bed and started thinking about what I wanted to do with fashion; and surprisingly I couldn't think of anything. I became slightly anxious and realized I don't have the same passion for my major as I did when I was in high school. When I told my parents, my mom said something that really stuck with me. "I'm honestly not surprised that you are changing majors. You love fashion and being fashionable, but working in fashion is different." She was and still is right. I love looking good and I love helping other people look good, but there is so much more that I want to do. I want to travel the world and make memories. I want to be a part of projects that bring joy to viewers. I was actually disappointed when I realized I couldn't combine my fashion major with a media minor; I couldn't get the combination to work for me. So instead of staying in the career path I made for myself as a kid, I chose to make a new one. Like Denise (above), I have responsibilities. But this time, my responsibility is to make sure I am happy with my decisions in life. I am majoring in Digital Media Production with a concentration in Television. With this major I plan to be a camera operator or a video editor (maybe both!). I am extremely excited about this change and I look forward to what the future holds. Oh and I still do have a dream of owning a bakery; don't fret. I plan to open one after I retire. And no I don't plan on waiting until 65 to retire 😂

For those of you who may be like me and are deciding to change your major, know that it is completely normal. You don't have to decide on a major until sophomore year. Freshman year is the time to find out what interests you. Also, the classes you took most likely won't be wasted. You can use them for general electives or common core classes. So, I listed three tips to think about when you are deciding to change majors.

1. Research! Changing to some majors may add time to your college career (i.e history to pre-med). Look into the specific career path you want to do. Researching may also help you decide whether or not you want to transfer to another school.

2. Talk with a counselor in the college you are changing into. Make sure you are talking with the new counselor and not the counselor from your current college. The new counselor can help you schedule your classes and talk to you about scholarships that may be available in the new major.

3. Talk with family or friends. But, don't let anyone sway you one way or another. This is your life and your future career, not theirs. However, if your parents are paying for college, talk to them about changes in scholarships or any changes that will affect them financially.

Good luck with your major change. I wish exciting things upon your life and career! Until next time, Be Uniquely You.
