Sophomore: A Year in Review

Sophomore year was a very interesting, challenging, and crazy year for me. All in all, I made it out alive. I had tons of great opportunities. I had great trips with my friends. I also found that no matter how hard I try to isolate myself from drama, I will always be wrapped around it. But, I learned a lot about myself and other people this year.
NEW MAJOR:
To start, I changed my major spring of freshman year from Fashion Merchandising to Digital Media Production with a concentration in Television. Therefore, I started all of my new major classes this past year. It was a little intimidating because everyone knew everyone in the concentration (Television is not a huge major), and I did not. But, I threw myself into every learning opportunity that I could. I joined TV2 my first semester in the major as a audio operator. I would wake up early on Friday mornings (even though I didn't have class) to play my part in the Flashcast going well. Second semester, I was a camera operator for two live entertainment shows, "The Blurb" and "The Agenda". One was on Tuesday nights and the other was Thursday nights. To say that I was busy is an understatement.
WORK:
Working the two shows at night was hard for a few reasons. The biggest one being I worked Monday and Wednesday mornings 6:50 AM until 11:00. That sounds like a piece of cake now (compared to my internship that I will talk about in a post coming up), but it was really hard to wake up that early and still have to go to class afterwards. I work as a Production Assistant at my school. This entails that we help set up technology in meeting rooms and for events that come into the building. We also troubleshoot problems that may occur. I also got the opportunity to be trained to work the booth in one of the main areas. I would be assigned to a specific event and I would have to make sure any audio, video, mics, etc. was working and cued up. I love working where there and I hope to learn even more in my next two years.
FRIENDS:
There were a few bumps and bruises with my friends this past year. Some of them don't speak to each other any more, but hey, that's life. I'm still friends with all of them separately, which is great. But, it was not all bad times during the year. We went on some fun trips (mostly to Cleveland). We went to the Cleveland Museum of Art (?) for Arin's 20th birthday and it was a lot of fun. We blindfolded her and refused to tell her where we were going. Arin and I did the same for my newest friend Anna's birthday. We blindfolded her and took her to Cleveland Botanical Gardens. (We do a lot of surprise things if you can't tell). My friends Kat, Sophia, Claire and I also went to Cleveland earlier in the year to see the North Market. We ended up going to Case Western Reserve University to visit one of Claire's friends. I've got to say, my friends and I make the most out of our free time. This year was a little bittersweet because all but one of them are studying abroad or in New York for the fall semester. They get on my nerves sometimes, but I wouldn't trade them for the world. I also found two great friends in Lizzy and Olivia, my Fight Club. Fight Club is an extension of The Impact Movement. The Impact Movement is a Christian group that has a diverse group of people trying to start or enhance their journey with God. I was lucky enough to be put in a group with these two. And while I would tell you all the stuff about what we talk about, the number one rule of fight club is to not talk about fight club (sorry!).
OVERALL:
Sophomore year taught me not to let people walk all over me. I was able to figure out how to deal with things and communicate to people when things upset me or make me feel less than I should. I also found that a little space from people is OK. Even though they might not understand it, if it is for my mental benefit, I shouldn't have to apologize. I am excited to see how junior year goes. I am also excited to see how I make new friends and try new experiences. Here's to another year!
